I did this with the nose of a broken shortboard. Works great! Not too sure how to attach a good handle though. Any tips are appreciated.

1. Try drilling a couple holes where you want the handle to attach (make the hole good sized- around an inch in diameter.
2. Then fill with a filler/ plastic putty and cover the area on top of the fiberglass around the hole (this will provide the strength)
3. After filler has hardened drill a hole sufficiently wide enough to fit the rope or webbing for your strap (you can drill a slightly larger hole in the bottom to countersink the knot to reduce friction as long as its less wide than the original hole.
4. I like using mountain climbing webbing for my hand straps- it doesn’t chafe, is insanely durable and costs pennies per foot at your local outdoor store like REI.
You can send some pics if you complete it. Good luck…

Nice, you can make these out of anything! We used fast food trays growing up. We weren’t getting rides like that though, so good for a first run. Can’t wait to see what Cy’s up to now..

Great little surf craft and most excellent short film! I made a hand foil out of white oak using software that generates foils for airplane wings. I’ll shoot you some pix/video after I test them. They’re way too complicated, but the experiment with the foil will be interesting.

What are some other good bouyant woods that could be used for a handplane? Also, how do you go about the sealing process? Just a gloss coat?

we used paulownia, but just a pine sealed with lineseed oil will work. tung oil works well too

Why not just boogie board?!

Great idea. I was inspired by this video to make a couple of my own, and they create some awesome rides.

does the paulownia need to be sealed too? is the paulownia wood at any local lumber yard? what thickness did you start with?

Yes Paulownia needs to be sealed with Linseed oil too. Although it won’t rot and warp like other woods if it isn’t. Sealing just makes it last for years and years. We suggested 1/2 linseed and 1/2 gum turpentine for the first coat, then the next day just linseed. Let dry and you’re ready to shred

Do you guys have a preference over cutting out a grip like Hess’s hand planes vs. the strap?

I’ve been making handplanes for a couple of years now. What works for me for straps is I glass pieces of pvc into the deck and run three zip ties through a piece of tubular webbing. check out pictures on my site:

Nice movie! Works real well with the nose of a skateboard too, plus there are already the holes for the trucks which you can tie a strap to. I used an old boogie hand strap, minus the leash. Thanks for the vid!
