Nice movie! Works real well with the nose of a skateboard too, plus there are already the holes for the trucks which you can tie a strap to. I used an old boogie hand strap, minus the leash. Thanks for the vid!

I’ve been making handplanes for a couple of years now. What works for me for straps is I glass pieces of pvc into the deck and run three zip ties through a piece of tubular webbing. check out pictures on my site:

Do you guys have a preference over cutting out a grip like Hess’s hand planes vs. the strap?

Yes Paulownia needs to be sealed with Linseed oil too. Although it won’t rot and warp like other woods if it isn’t. Sealing just makes it last for years and years. We suggested 1/2 linseed and 1/2 gum turpentine for the first coat, then the next day just linseed. Let dry and you’re ready to shred

does the paulownia need to be sealed too? is the paulownia wood at any local lumber yard? what thickness did you start with?

we used paulownia, but just a pine sealed with lineseed oil will work. tung oil works well too

What are some other good bouyant woods that could be used for a handplane? Also, how do you go about the sealing process? Just a gloss coat?
