While more expensive and time consuming than your average bar of wax, here’s an option for all you ultra-environmentally conscious surfers out there. Made from nothing but bee’s wax, coconut oil and tree resin, this wax works well in all water conditions if you play around with the ingredient ratios. Feel free to post comments if you’ve tried your own batch, if you’ve found alternate ingredients or specific ratios for different water temps.

Nice video, that’s the recipe which we invented back in 1998 and gave to the surfing world, it’s won quite a few awards around the world .
Just for the record, the recipe was invented by my wife

Rad Roy, its so cool to know who came up with that combo. Anyone else out there tweak Roy’s wife’s recipe with any increased success? We’ve been playing with it for a few months now and adding some different ingredients- results coming soon…

I hear that some peope are ading kaolin to make the wax bump up more.
We started with the beeswax and coconut oil combination, and searched for quite a while before coming up with the tree resin additive for cold water. The breakthrough came when we found an old book ( from around 1900 ) of industrial recipes, there were ski wax recipes in there for climbing wax, designed to make skis grip in the snow. The recipes used pine resin. That was the clue.
It’s strange but no other oil seems to work at all coconut is the only one, so far.

Interesting stuff. Is this recipe better for cold or warm water? Any way to tweak it one way or the other?

The recipe is better for cool temps ranging from 64-69 degrees Fahrenheit. You can play with the mixture of coconut oil and bee’s wax, the more coconut oil the softer the wax gets thus the better it is for colder water. Happy melting!

Hi, I’m from Brazil, I’d like to know where do you guys find this coconut oil for sale. Is there any kind of industrial coconut oil that could be cheaper? The one I found here it’s too expensive! I`d like to try the recipe in our warm waters! Thanks.

@danilo:
it should be very easy to get coconut oil in brazil that s not too expensive but it still won t be as cheap as other oils. look for it online or in super markets. the warmer the water the less oil you put in the mixture. you also don t need the pine resin. so you just need 6 parts wax and one part oil.

Love the recipe. Thanks Stewarts. I am going to give it a try soon. I am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction as far as tree resin though. Is this the same product that can be purchased via an herb, spice, or incense store? Has anyone tweeked with how much kaolin to use? Thanks all and greetings from Ventura, Cali.
