Taken in 2004 from during the Pipeline Masters with a trusty (and sometimes not) 16mm Bolex camera. This clip gives a rare glimpse into the action at the world’s most famous surf contest from an angle few people see. The last few shots were taken during the final. Cy had the best seat in the house for many of the waves including Jamie O’brien’s winning wave, but upon developing that footage it was clear the film was not “registering” in the gate correctly. The result wasn’t tv friendly, but we dig it…

I really like this angle of Pipeline. What causes the footage to blur like that?

2004 was a great year. The Eddie contest at the bay was so clean. And Pipe was really good while the circus was on.

The blur in the footage was caused by a problem with registration inside the camera. Basically 16mm film (and all motion picture film) is a series of still images taken at 24 frames per second (25 in PAL) and the sprocket holes you always see on the side of film are the place where an internal claw pulls down to advance the next frame. When you take movies, especially at 60+ fps (referred to as over-cranking to achieve true slow motion- as seen in this clip) the film shoots through the place its exposed super quickly and sometimes it doesn’t sync up perfectly with the shutter which makes sure the film is static while in the area where the film is being exposed. This “streaking and halo” are caused by the film being “pulled” through the exposure area causing the light to “drag across the each image. Kinda complicated.. I hope that explains it..
