Power Tool Basics: Orbital Sander Prep – Surf Sufficient

We really like the orbital sander here at Korduroy. This one amazing tool carves smooth concaves into foam, preps dings, sculpts wooden handplanes and alaias, sands glass jobs, polishes cars, and buffs toenails. Despite these positive attributes, many are intimidated by its rough exterior and raw torque. Fear not, this tutorial will deliver you to the gates of circular sanding heaven.

This tutorial seems very specific, are there any other tips you’d give to someone new to the circular sander?

  3. Tom Bradley Says:

What brands do you guys prefer?

    @ Kelly and Tom,
Fein makes the highest quality in our opinion, dewalt and bosch make good ones for your money. we love the harbor freight circular sander- purchase a lifetime warranty and you’re good to go for next to nothing!
Other tips would be- know when to go slow- when sanding on delicate operations (wooden fins, fiberglass over foam, etc.) use the middle of the pad on a low setting and sweep back and forth rapidly. This ensures a slow and even stripping. When you really want to move some stuff use the edge of the pad with a lower grit on a higher setting. Hope this helps..
