Knee Power – Sea Movies

Here’s a better glimpse at the surfing behind our last Legless InnerView. Brothers Troy and Chayne Simpson have been pushing the performance barriers of surfing for over a decade. Check out this edition of Sea Movies as they dismantle wedges and walls in Indo and Oz.

phil curtis my biology teacher from high school was so ripped that the chalk would sometimes explode when he wrote on the chalkboard. he was more than 50 years old in 2000 and would always let us know when he just got back from knee boarding mavericks.

  2. Happy Says:

Those guys are ripping! Kinda looks like its hard to set a good line in the tube, maybe its the high performance board they are riding, the way there board bounces and chatters,
Either way, coo video , guys are shredding

  3. Jeff Says:

    Sweet

  4. Timmy Says:

    kneeboarding is the worst ever

  5. MackLuster Says:

Gliding is cool in all forms. It’s about time to chop my surf series fish into something more fun, it seems.

  6. steen Says:

    Timmy carries no stoke

Ha Ira- Mr. Curtis was my chem teacher in 1992 at Aptos. Last time I saw him was about 6-7 years back coming into the beach at Mav’s with a snapped board, I was spectating. Didn’t see what happened but based on what the other surfers were saying it was gnarly. I used to see him and my art/photo teacher kneeboarding a lot back in the 90′s.
I notice these guys in the film don’t wear flippers? Is that typical of the younger guys? Most kneeboarders I see wear them?

  8. Hibernation Says:

DAmn! Those were some of the meanest CUTTIES ever! And talk about barrel riding…lines straighter than the horizon. Also, props for the arial and pitchfork/nose dig. Pure style, grace, nostalgia, with a postmodern touch. That is surfing!

  9. bungknees Says:

Just awesome to see there are still alot of guys who love this sport, lifestyle, around the world. It is a special breed, who don’t really care to how the masses feel about kneeboarding. Its the best sport there could be, so close to every wave, deep in thebarrel, and just the power you can get from a short fat board is amazing. Love it.

  10. Cam Says:

Well done to the Korduroy boys, loving kneelo week, truely inspiring surfing. As a footnote, there has been a clip posted on a commercial website with the patron saint of Oz Kneeboarding ‘Dave Parkes’ devouring a nice tube at his home town of Byron recently…see http://plus.coastalwatch.com/surftv/WeeklyHighlights

  11. samo Says:

to state a fact. this is “kneelo-ing.” you’re right, these guys arnt wearing flippers because their boards range in the 6′-8′ range unlike the traditional kneemachines that are in the 4’6-5’8″ range. they also dont hold the barrel line because they are too wide and have too much curve in the rail plan vs the traditional boards. the fins are way up off the tail, 12″ and up on most modern oz boards. interesting boards and surfing, where cutbacks, off the lips, slider things, tricks that is, points getting are premium moves that score higher points than tube riding. lost on these guys is the desire to get tubed as the premier reason to kneeboard. its a different thing than the weird kneegrump at your local top to bottom heaving barrel spot, they are more “progressive,” they say. still, isnt the greenough, peter crawford footage STILL the best? surf it all, TIMMY!

  12. Water Slaughter | Korduroy - DIY Surfing | Spreading Digital Aloha Says:

[...] early film by Tim Bonython featuring Simon Farrer who influenced Troy and Chayne Simpson and Michael Novakov, who’s archival left tubes were featured in our Legless InnerView clip [...]

  13. captain Says:

reef booties with trunks – pretty much sums these guys up.

  14. steen Says:

Timmy, Capo, Timmy I think you will find these boards are 5’8 and under. These guys dont wear flippers because they are super fit young guys and dont need them. Its definately a different thing to your negative kneegrump, these guys are stoked about life and get more barrels than we have had hot dinners. This is about keeping the stoke alive boys.

  15. kel Says:

is there frontside or backside while kneeriding? i wanna see some kneelos get spit out at pipe

  16. Haynes Says:

Steen – Re: Timmy & Captain I concur with your observations.

The hidden truth as to why kneelos can ride boards 5′ – 5’8” is simple – they do not have to float over inflated egos nor do they carry the extra weight of extremely large chips on their shoulders. The fact is that kneelos have quietly gone about doing what they do, quite well and more often than not have contributed to surfing as awhole.

George Greenough, Steve Lis, Peter Crawford, Peter & John Ware, Dave Parkes, Neil Luke Craig McDonald, Dale Ponsford, Albert Whiteman, Bud McCray the list goes on, these are just the shapers.

If we list Surfers add to the Eleven already mentioned you can add -
Michael Novakov, Simon Farrer, Troy and Chayne Simpson, Current World Champion – Albert Munoz and the list goes on.

  17. Chayno Says:

    Samo… Your facts are wrong.
My two standard sizes are 5’6″ and 5’8″. My biggest Board is 6’0″ and only comes out on the biggest days. I know for a fact that the other guys surfing in these clips ride the same sort of sizes and shapes.
Another fact your getting wrong is that we love the tube. My home break is one of the hollowest waves on the East coast of Oz.
If you were only going to surf when the waves were hollow and perfect then yeah sure, you wouldn’t need the “cutbacks, off the lips, slider things, tricks” but the truth is the ocean does not always co-operate… And to put it simply, these tricks are fun. Forgive me if im wrong but i thought thats what it was all about.
All the negativity needs to end, its Kneeboard Week… How good is that!!!
    Yeew

  18. Robert Says:

I’ve been a kneerider since the 70′s, and though things have changed a bit, it’s great to see the resurgence of kneeriders all over the world. It’s still a fantastic way to ride waves and a great way of life !!!!

  19. Tim Says:

Absolutely awesome to see! I’ve seen paraplegic athletes rip on skis and play wheelchair rugby and other sports. But surfing at this level!?! Stoked to see that life isn’t over if someday you’d loose the ability to walk. You guys rip!

  20. Rippe Says:

    Great surfing!
    @Tim above:
Ya we’re trying to get the masses to acknowledge us. It’s all we think about. It just made my day that someone like you said such kind, positive and encouraging words about us. Thank you Tim. You’re my hero! It sucks that we are paralyzed… but we try. I’m sure Troy & Chayno feel the same. They have to be wheel-chaired to the shoreline everyday. Poor guys

  21. Johnny LaJolla Says:

There was a guy named Earl that kneed at La Jolla reefs in the 80′s. One day someone yelled “stand up!” so he did, with fins on, and that’s the way he surfed ever since.

  22. Lester Says:

Absolute class. Inspiring us here in Africa.Cheers guys.
