Hi people at Korduroy,

I’m a 51-year-old community journalist and dusty-rusty surfer in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa – that’s a small university town in the escarpment 60km from our local break.
I’m a quiet fan of surf movies and was appalled at some of the militaristic surf corporation, explosive, almost violent surf movies I’ve seen – that image of Kelly et al on jetskis hammering through the calm seas off Indo, a luxury cruiser in the background and then the bodda bodda of a chopper as they go and “seek surf” – one can almost imagine one of them extolling the virtues of napalm in the morning … Not lekka. Gives credence to arguments of cultural imperialism.
Nou, ja, as we still say in the liberated part of SA, it is quite apparent that Stoked & Broke is unique and provides a marvelous alternative to the industrialization and monopolization of surfing. I have an odd relationship with surf company’s – Billabong SA is down the road at J-Bay and I have an idea of where they come from and what they do. It really is not all terrible, but there can be a loss of soul and craftspeopleship (?!) in the process. And who knows what else is lost when individuals work in hierarchical corporate structures – even in a surf company.
Your flickie provides an inspiring retro-yet-futuristic perspective all this smash-and-flash stuff and I do hope that as your success grows, which surely it must since it hits the right social chord, you try to remain true to your founding philosophy of independence, simple living, health and re-imagining life outside of the fast, greedy, angry lane.
I particularly enjoy your footage and interviews with older surfers – giving a spread of opinions – and I really enjoyed your portrayal of the Horns.
