Part 13: Tyler Warren x Zac Baillie

Words & Photos Zac Baillie

http://zacbailliephoto.blogspot.com/

I met Tyler whilst he was the artist/shaper in residence at the DEUS ‘TEMPLE OF ENTHUSIASM’ in Canggu, Bali where I live.  He had just returned from a trip to some other islands with Dunc Macfarlane who was kind enough to share his guy. Haha. Tyler is a renaissance man in the truest sense, and a rounded man be he painting, surfing, shaping, (beer drinking haha). Tyler puts the same passion into all these, and does it with a flair and humble demeanor that belies his talents and the years of work he’s put into his craft(s). To watch him shaping this board, nicknamed ‘Bali Soap,’ all by eye and feel, no templates, just passion and experience, was quite eye opening for me and was a nice way to spend a few days, especially shooting him on medium format 120 film.

Part 12: Richard Scott x Tom Powell

Blog: www.longwhiteclouds.co.uk

Richard Scott is the self taught, retro board guru and shaper of A Third Shade Surfboards. I took this set of shots of him in his shaping room in Porthleven, Cornwall. The board was a 6’2″ x 21 1/2″ x 2 3/4″ double winged, round tail…single through to spiral vee… multi-fin quad/thruster option.

This man loves to shape. He’s a full time design, teacher, and last time we spoke he had 12 pupils making boards at school, nearly all of which were pretty fun sounding shapes. He kindly shaped me a fun little 6 foot single fin egg made for a trip up to Vancouver Island next month. Looking forward to trying out on some chilly ones. He does a good handplane too. www.thirdshade.com

Part 11:  Rich Corbin x Greg Eavey

Words & Photos Rich Corbin

Rich Corbin is a local Wrightsville Beach / Wilmington based surfer who recently spent some time with one of the area’s best shapers and glassers, Greg Eavey.   Greg is a full time shaper and musician who has been busy making Simmons inspired boards, logs, and customs on the east coast and is also a talented musician.  He shapes from a quiet industrial space behind a few shops and minutes from the local surf.  I got to ride one of his older shapes when I lived out there and loved it.  The rest can be described by the photographer Rich:
“I’m just a guy who really enjoys longboard surfing and who happens to live in one of the most heavily shortboard influenced surfing towns on the east coast. I’ve been surfing for about 7 years but grew up about two hours from the coast in Raleigh but I spent my summers on Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks where I learned to surf. Right now I’m living in Wilmington, my blog alternative slide mongrels just kind of shows what I see in my neck of the woods. I’ve been taking pictures for about 3 years as a hobby and have known Greg for about that long. He shapes and glasses his own boards and is known as one of the premier glassers in North Carolina.”

Part 10:  Ed Cornell

Words & Photos Ed Cornell.

For the next edition of Autarkic….  this one is left best in the words of the photographer.

“I live in Washington D.C., home of the never-ending snowstorm…One shot is from a summer I spend in Indonesia, the spot I won’t name. The other surf shots are from a swell in November in Rockaway Beach New York, I took the bus to New York and took the subway out to Rockaway from Manhattan, one of the best swells of the fall. The other two are of me and my friend Jake doing some board shaping at his house in Alexandria, VA. This was our first attempt at shaping and the board has been out a few times this winter already. All shot on film and scanned digitally.”

These photos are my own contribution to the Autarkic project for Korduroy TV.  Michel Junod is a shaper and surfer living in Santa Cruz, California.  He’s been shaping since 1966, and makes custom boards of all shapes and sizes.  Michel (pronounced Mish – EL) is also a great surfer and was featured in Thomas Campbell’s new film, the Present, riding logs and smaller boards in Africa with the likes of Alex Knost and Jacob Stuth.  From his shaping bay near the train tracks in Santa Cruz he’s just a few blocks away from Steamer Lane and Cowells one of the areas premiere and well known breaks.  Michel’s boards are all 100% hand crafted from start to finish.  He has collab’d with Thomas Campbell on a couple of models including the Pignar and Nowski.  Check out Michel’s boards in shops like Thalia Street Surf Shop, Shelter, Mollusk, and more around California… or pay him a visit in Santa Cruz.

Part 8: Ed Fladung x Marco Ortiz
photos Ed Fladung (www.qualitypeoples.com)

Ed is an ex-pat surfer, photographer, blogger, and graphic designer living south of the border in Mexico. A lover of hulls, hand shaped boards, and photography, Ed and I first met at Shelter Surf Shop a few years back. Ed does remarkable portrait work. Here are a few snaps of a local Mexican shaper, Marco Ortiz, who shapes under the label “ATL” which means “water” in Nahuatl. His shaping bay is in Guadalajara a popular manufacturing town in central Mexico and close to the famous agave fields where most tequila is made. Ed cites he is becoming a very popular shaper in Mexico. A site for ATL is in the works, so be sure to bookmark (www.atlsurfboards.com) for some more info on Marco’s shapes.

Part 7: Nick Cook x Ryan Lovelace

photos and words via Nick Cook (http://inthehillsphotography.com)

“Point Concept surfboards is an amazing one-man operation run by Mr. Ryan Lovelace out of Santa Barbara, California. Mr. Lovelace taught himself how to make shred-craft a few years ago and he is still designing, shaping, coloring, and glassing all of his own creations. Ryan is a true craftsman who’s creations bring ear to ear smiles to those around him. My handy AE-1 teamed up with some Kodak 400vc to make these images, straight scans…”

Ryan Lovelace has indeed been making some great looking (and riding from what I’ve heard) wavecraft. Check him out at http://www.pointconceptsurf.com/

Part 6: Brock Carpenter x Hayden Cox x Daniel Watkins

all photos Brock Carpenter (http://thespruceconceptual.tumblr.com/)

Brock Carpenter is a young Aussie surfer and creative type who likes to shoot with a Holga. I’ve been impressed with Brock’s work with his lo-fi camera for a while now. Here is a snap he took of Haydenshapes creator and founder Hayden Cox. This photograph was shot when he was about to launch his new patented Fiberflex carbon rail technology. To check out Hayden’s surfboards head to (http://www.haydenshapes.com/).

Another shot he sent over was of Dan Watkins who Hayden commissions to do all his custom board artwork, orders, ads, catalogues, yardages, etc. More of Daniel Watkin’s work can be seen here (http://www.yeuxx.com/)

Part 5: Lachie Goldsworthy x Dain Thomas

all photos Lachie Goldsworthy (http://eraculprits.tumblr.com/)

Lachie Goldsworthy is one of the crew behind the Nine Lives Gallery in Australia. The Nine Lives is a gallery space in the heart of Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley. They feature local, interstate, and the odd international artist – all of whom have provided an assorted array of visual pleasures. Citing a focus on affordable art, with no correlation between price and quality, Nine Lives aim is to keep the prices for works down allowing people the chance to have original artworks from talented emerging contemporaries on their walls. The space itself is a blank canvas of sorts, it can be used for exhibitions, showings, photo shoots, small events and temporary studio space. Prior artists include folks like Alex Knost and Ozzie Wright. On top of running this great concept, Lachie shoots film. One of his recent subjects was the proprietor of Sea Surfboards, a popular underground label featuring custom boards of all kinds and a unique clothing line. Check out Dain’s shapes and designs at www.seasurfboards.com and Lachie Goldsworthy’s photos at http://eraculprits.tumblr.com.

Part 2:  ROB KULISEK III x JON WEGENER

all photos Rob Kulisek (http://www.robkulisek.com)

Most people reading this site are likely already familiar with the contributions the Wegeners have made to Korduroy TV and the entire surfing world.  Jon and Tom Wegener are in many ways responsible for the resurgence of finless wooden craft like the alaia making their way into lineups around the world.  Rob Kulisek is a fine young lensmen from the East Coast.  Seen here are some photographs he took of Jon Wegener and his factory in California.  For more on the Wegeners check out (http://www.wegenersurfboards.com).

Part 1: REBECCA PEPPERELL x ORIGINAL SURFBOARD COMPANY

all photos Rebecca Pepperell (http://www.flickr.com/photos/rpepperell/)

Sally is the founder of the Original Surfboard Company (http://www.originalsurfboards.co.uk/) – they make traditional British surfboards (bellyboards) based on Hawaiian paipos. She’s really passionate about getting everyone out there and enjoying the surf. Also photographed with one of these traditional British bellyboards is John Isaac, who owns the legendary Revolver Surf Shop in Newquay (http://www.revolversurf.co.uk/).

Beginning Monday, KorduroyTV is going to mix it up a bit on our blog. We will now include a new weekly blog feature with Ryan Tatar entitled Autarkic. “Autarky is the quality of being self-sufficient. Autarky exists whenever an entity can survive or continue its activities without external assistance.” Obviously, as a do-it-yourself network, Korduroy.tv is a huge advocate of people out there who are creating things on their own. So with the help of the wonderful photography of Ryan Tatar, we will be showcasing images of people around surfing who have that do-it-yourself state of mind. And as always, if you or someone you know is making something cool, let us know! Tune in Mondays for more autarky…

BIO: Ryan Tatar
While many accost mainstream surf culture only to start new elite in-crowds in hypocritical attempts to remake cool in their own image, Ryan Tatar is just stoked. Growing up far from surf cliques, this Michigan native moved to California at 26 to experience a life he’d only seen in films and magazines.

Humbly sliding into the surf scene, his subtle images have caught the attention of many on the fringes of the surfing world. Wielding a cheap emulsion exposing camera and suitcases full of expired film. Ryan’s love for the beach and no frills attention to detail produce images that ooze with a palatable devotion to the wave riding experience.

Ryan’s keyboard prowess is evident in his blog Shaka’s and Singlefins which is a happening source for internet surfers. .”
