Reis Paluso is head of the Korduroy blog and recently accompanied Surf For Life in El Salvador to participate and document their efforts.

Alex Fang, founder of Surf for Life, noticed that many of the places he traveled to score waves had economies based on surf tourism. However, after talking with locals, he found that much of the money didn’t cycle through the entire community. In response, he has worked to set up surf trips where guests have the opportunity to give back to the communities they travel to by taking part in developmental projects in between surf sessions.

After a successful fund-raising effort this past year, a great group was gathered for a special trip to build a school in El Cuco, El Salvador. Participants included professional surfer Holly Beck, shaper Danny Hess, writers Jaimal Yogis and Mark Lukach, artist Jay Nelson, photographers Erin Kunkel and Ward Robinson, UFC fighter Urijah Faber, travel journalists Sachi Cunningham and Zachary Slobig, tech blog entrepreneur Brian Lam, and San Franpsycho clothing brand creator Andy Olive.

We experienced an idyllic trip, complete with a massive quiver of boards and handplanes, including 2 coffins full of gorgeous Danny Hess shapes, a great host at the Azul Surf Club, Lisette Perez, and a nice run of overhead south swell. Aside from the fun, we worked our butts off. But there is something about good old fashioned manual labor that really satisfies. And knowing that you are doing something that will impact a community not only now but for future generations as well, can help anyone power through that pile of dirt, to mixing cement, and stacking brick after brick until they resemble the walls of a classroom. The following video is a little visual summary of the fun.

People are what make up a place and an event. Everyone has their own look, their own story, and their own way of doing things. Utilizing a portrait style of shooting, Korduroy’s Erik Derman gives us an outsiders look into the scene at the 2011 Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles.

Below is a quick interview with Erik to get some insight into this new project he has taken on:

Tell us a little about your project. How did it come about?

Just being interested in humanity. Humans…there are some classic humans out there. And everyone has a story. On some recent travels, I’ve been getting portrait style video. Pushing in and focusing on the crispness of the person’s pupil to try and tell a story through my subject’s eyes.

Where have you shot so far?

I started in Puerto Escondido, cruising through town with Derek Dunfee, finding interesting characters. He was shooting stills and I was shooting video. The outcome was great and it really inspired me to go on another path. So far I have shot in downtown San Diego, Nicaragua, Mexico and Panama.

How have people’s reactions been to the camera? Did this generally change from location to location?

Some people are shy, some people love it and others hate it. It just depends on the person I guess. There is a wall people put up, out in public. It’s weird. So breaking that wall for that moment to capture their story within a few seconds, that’s the goal… Some people had heavy stories to share others were just day to day living.

What makes you decide to shoot with somebody?

I just see people I find interesting, some have unique features, I don’t know…

What has doing these video portraits taught you about the general vibe of each place you’ve shot?

This has taught me to put my guard down and project relaxation and happiness. Some of the areas are pretty sketchy for cameras. I just try to put myself into funny scenarios and be comfortable with the worst that could happen. I’ve approached a couple heavy gang members or banditos with my camera hanging out like some kooky tourist and more often than not they turn out to be really nice people. And I haven’t lost my camera yet so it’s all good.

Check the last wave for footage of potentially the fastest any human has been naturally propelled across a wave’s face.

Being that Korduroy headquarters is in Encinitas, when Tobin Yelland (Beautiful Losers) shared this video that he stars in, made by Chris Johanson in 1999, we were rolling. If you have ever been to this north county San Diego town, you’ll know that they hit the nail on the head with a bit of ironic humor. Encinitas is laden with yoga studios, meditation centers, Swamis, surfers, and health conscious upper-middle class neo-hippies who are seeking to living in the now…

“It’s a self-help film about individuality and what individuals pick and choose from society and culture to make our uniqueness. Although there is some tongue in cheek humor energy in the film, it is none the less about issues that I think are very serious and more than humorous.” – Chris Johanson
