Jim Banks and The Indo Odyssey

Jim Banks was on his way to becoming one of the best surfers on the world tour in the early 1980’s. He was fresh off a win in Bali when he mysteriously walked away from his professional career and changed his path to one of finding remote surf breaks that he could enjoy alone. It was his passion. So he went for it. And he has succeeded in finding some of the most far-flung waves in the world.

Not only this, but Jim’s craftsmanship has led him to building fine-tuned surfboards that encapsulate his over 35 years of research, knowledge, and testing. Not to mention, the testing grounds for his boards are in some of the most incredible waves the world has to offer. Starting at the ripe age of 12, Jim has found ways of turning designs that were limited in the types of waves that they could be surfed in, into high performance, large wave, shred machines!

Well, Jim is on a new adventure in life: one of travel, exploration, and the unknown. The Indo Odyssey began in April 2010 and will be a 6-month journey along the entire south west coast of Indonesia. Jim intends to rekindle that stoke of adventure and exploration that has faded over time.

With over 4000km of coastline to investigate, Jim’s adventure is broken down into 12 legs, each spanning for 2 weeks that even YOU can join in on. Yes, you read that right. You can be a part of the adventure. Even though the journey is underway, there is still plenty of room to jump aboard a 2 week leg of the trip and truly experience surf exploration.

Here’s a look at what’s gone down so for on the Indo Odyssey:

If you can’t afford the time or money to join in on a leg of this adventure, you can still track his progress through Indo at http://www.indo-odyssey.com/ Here you can sign up for free access to his journal for a day-by-day write up plus pictures.
