Auditorium with Sonia Laan

A Dutch photography student, Sonia Laan turned to the camera out of a need to express herself. She came to surfing for a simliar reason and now she does both, more to keep herself sane than to become a pro at either. She says surfing provides space for her to be more creative and since taking up the sport, the sea has become her muse. For her, this song “Baby Missiles” by The War on Drugs brings up the same nervous excitement as going out on a trip–when everything is interesting because it is unfamiliar. “The unknown used to scare the shit out of me,” she says, “but now I embrace it and just take pictures of it.”
