Dear Korduroy, From Bjorn Kallerud

Bjorn sent us this note recently, to tell us about why he moved into his van in southern California’s beautiful coastal city of Santa Barbara. Keep the stoke alive out there.

Hey,

I wanted to write to you to thank you for doing what you do and share my story with you.

I am a fourth year student at UC Santa Barbara. I came to UCSB on a golf scholarship and the day I signed the scholarship letter, I bought my first surfboard on a whim, determined to teach myself how to surf. My first year here I stumbled upon Korduroy and it couldn’t have gotten me more stoked. I must have made every DIY project on the site. I quickly realized that I had found myself in the ocean, and quit the golf team and gave up my scholarship at the end of the year. My passion for the ocean was ignited, in large part because of Korduroy. This went on for the next couple of years.

Inspired by Cyrus, and in search of a simple and free lifestyle, I moved into a VW Van in June while I finish up my degree. I ended up parking my van outside of some buddies’ house, where I’m able to shower and cook in return for a keg a month. The basement of this house was converted into a shaping room by the guys that lived there the year before. These guys shaped a bunch of boards and I knew them from around town. They agreed to teach me how to shape so long as I kept the room going. The stoke of bodysurfing with a handplane I made with directions from Korduroy had instilled in me a burning desire to ride a board that I had shaped. With the help of the guys, I shaped my first board. People around were stoked and started asking me to shape boards for them, so I rolled with it. I just finished my 11th board and have more on the way.

The stoke that you initiated with Korduroy is spreading through our beachside community, thank you for doing what you do.
