Cyanotype Photography by Yannick Le Toquin

Photo Yannick LeToquin - cyanotype print (10)   Based on a print process invented in 1842, Yannick Le Toquin has started to revive the process using modern and archival surf imagery entirely from France. Yannick’s work was primarily based off black & white film, but as of recent he’s begun expanding his experiments into a mix of digital and various analog formats. During the process, Yannick says there is a slight lack of control on the outcome due to varied prep, time exposed and the chemical mix of the photo sensitive product (potassium ferricyanide and a solution of ferric ammonium citrate), but the outcome is insane and well worth the time experimenting.   Photo YLeToquin - procede cyanotype (1) Photo YLeToquin - procede cyanotype (3) Photo YLeToquin - procede cyanotype (5)   Yannick was kind enough to give us a breakdown of his process as well!: – I use a negative from digital or analog photos, and put a photosensitive product (potassium ferricyanide and a solution of ferric ammonium citrate ) with a brush on a paper, like watercolor paper or canvas. – You keep the paper in the dark during drying. The negative is put down on the paper with a glass, and I put in under the sun during few minutes. The product react with UV. You have to make few test for to have the right time, the good exposition. Generally I keep the paper under the sun, 3-4 minutes at midday time. – After that, you just have to wash the paper in water few minutes and to let dry. The final print is always a surprise, and you can ” play ” with the brush for to have a more graphic photo, and you can use just a part of the negative, or make overprint with few negative. Each print is unique, you can’t reproduce the same photo again and again.Photo Yannick LeToquin - cyanotype print (1) Photo Yannick LeToquin - cyanotype print (2) Photo Yannick LeToquin - cyanotype print (3) Photo Yannick LeToquin - cyanotype print (4) Photo Yannick LeToquin - cyanotype print (5) Photo Yannick LeToquin - cyanotype print (6) Photo Yannick LeToquin - cyanotype print (7) Photo Yannick LeToquin - cyanotype print (8) Photo Yannick LeToquin - cyanotype print (9)   Photo Yannick LeToquin - cyanotype print (11) Photo Yannick LeToquin - cyanotype print (12) Photo Yannick LeToquin - cyanotype print (13) Photo Yannick LeToquin - cyanotype print (14)
