It is estimated that Americans go through about 100 billion plastic bags a year, or 360 bags per year for every man, woman and child in the country. An estimated 100,000 marine mammals and up to 1 million sea birds die each year after ingesting or being tangled in plastic marine litter. Each year, more than 20,000 US beaches are closed or posted as unhealthy to recreate in the water.
Surfrider was founded more than 30 years ago by surfers in Malibu. These surfers were trying to !protect their local surf spot from a development project that would pollute the water and destroy the wave. Since 1984, Surfrider has grown to become one of the largest grassroots activist- based organizations protecting our coastlines, with 84 volunteer led chapters around the country.
To join in on the worldwide celebration of ISD you can join in on an event in your area at surfrider.org/isd. This is your day to celebrate the special coastal places you love and help Surfrider to protect them. We encourage you to Surf & Protect! Your celebration can take any form you want.
Surfrider is also hosting an Instagram/Twitter contest for the best #MySpecialPlace photo. The goal is to share where and why you love the places you love and work to help keep these places pristine! Its easy to enter, post a photo and include #mysepcialplace, #ISD15 and Tag @Surfrider. Prizes are given to the 4 best participants!
