“Is there surf there?” My friend’s words echo in my mind as I edit photographs of warm waters and waves from my end of 2012 surf trip. We’re getting ready for our next adventure but will we see more flat waters than the pitched green rooms that now colour my screen? That’s what surf travel is all about; the pre-trip anticipation and wonder if Huey will turn it on…or not. Perhaps we won’t see double over head barells but super fun waves and new cultures will be there to be explored in a part of the globe that we’ve never visited.
We were at a crossroads and we chose a new journey. We could head to a surf destination that we’ve tried and tested over the years or try something that for us is a little different.
First stop is the vibrant desert surf community of Dubai, centred around the local club, Surf Dubai. We arrive just in time for the fun of its annual surf celebration, the Sunset Open. To follow, will be trips to the famed desert wave pool and dates dancing with bull sharks on long left-handers in Oman (hopefully not too many sharks…). Sri Lanka, India and maybe surfing with the kids of Bangladesh will hopefully follow in 2013. Where else, who knows? That’s the beauty of travel. There are so many opportunities and places to see. Wherever the road leads this year, for now it’ll be nice to leave the cold winter of Europe behind for awhile.
