Exhibitionists: Becky Luth

Becky Luth grew up on a Montana farm, but it was her childhood dream of being a marine biologist that brought her to San Diego to attend college. Thanks to southern CA’s surf-friendly coastline and her husband’s influence as an artist, she became consumed by the surfing and learned to playfully capture surf and beach scenes as subjects for her paintings. She now lives in British Colombia with her husband and four sons. And though now her feet are mostly in boots and her board has retired to the garage, she still pulls her artistic inspiration from her memories of the ocean.

Song: “Ocean” by John Butler Trio

“I can’t say it really represents my work, but I really enjoy listening to good acoustic guitarists.”

1.) Who are your top three artistic influencers?

There are so many art influences, but I would have to say that Vincent Van Gogh, John Culqui and Rick Luth are probably in the top three!

2.) Where do you create your art?

I create my art in my home.

3.) How much time do you typically spend on each piece?

Time spent on a painting could be two to three days, up to a week, depending on the schedule around my family and teaching art.

4.) What mediums do you work in?

I enjoy working in oil, acrylic, watercolor and oil pastel.

5.) Do you have any advice for young artists?

Advice for young artists…“There is something in every one of you that waits and listens for the sound of the genuine in yourself. It is the only true guide you will ever have. And if you cannot hear it, you will all of your life spend your days on the ends of strings that somebody else pulls.” ― Howard Thurman
