Exhibitionists: Jürg Lindenberger

Cartoons aren’t just for kids. Jürg Lindenberger is an English illustrator living in Switzerland. Although he’s far from the ocean, he still applies that inspiration to his work which is incorporates text and figures with vibrant colors and exaggerated features. He explains here:

1.) Who are your top 3 artistic influencers?

Folk and outsider art, graphic design and German expressionism.

2.) Where do you create your art?

I gather a lot of inspiration when I’m out and about, walking to my studio, skateboarding or while spending time with my daughter. For actually doing my illustrations I go to my studio. To be able to concentrate I need a bit of space for myself.

3.) How much time do you typically spend on each piece?

For commissioned work I’m very glad when I have some time to let the brief settle and ideas grow. I don’t need a lot of time for the actual artwork nowadays. But finding out what works best for me in terms of illustration technique and work process took quite a bit of time experimenting in the first place.

4.) What mediums do you work in?

At the moment I mostly do sketches with pencil or any pen at hand in my sketchbook and then the final artwork with a Wacom board and Photoshop. I create my own brushes and only use very little of the programme itself. I don’t want Photoshop to take over but at the same time I’m pleased it allows me to work quickly and experiment with colours.

For stuff I do for exhibitions I love to work with brushes and inks. I love to see something evolve and not having to possibility to undo it.

5.) Do you have any advice for young artists?

I think it’s quite helpful if you have some confidence in your own artistic handwriting and if you try to follow your interests. Just doing stuff is very important to me, keep trying and practice. Have fun and slowly develop
