Exhibitionists: Kevin Butler

If you live in a coastal region, it’s likely that you see cars toting surfboards all around town. If you don’t, not to worry, Kevin Butler has you covered. When he sees a rad car with a surfboard, he shoots pictures, gets the make, model and owner details, and then draws an illustration of the rig and posts it up on his Tumblr blog — http://radcarswithradsurfboards.tumblr.com/. What results is a colorful catalog of radness. Here we get some details on our five favorite questions, along with a gallery of some choice rigs–including the one Cy is about to take on the road–set to a orchestral jam band song about driving.

1.) Who are your top 3 artistic influencers?

My Grandfather “Herb Leippe” / Mo Willems  / Dr. Suess

2.) Where do you create your art?

I photograph cars I see out in the world, then sit down and draw them, usually at my kitchen table.

3.) How much time do you typically spend on each piece?

Somewhere between 2 and 3 hours depending on what music is playing and how much coffee I’ve had.

4.) What mediums do you work in?

Most of the time I’ll start by snapping a photo with my iPhone. Then draw in graphite on thick textured paper. Then draw it again in ink, then scan it in, then drop color in digitally. Then have them offset printed. I have hand painted a few larger one of a kind ones for special occasions. For that: Acrylic on Paper or Canvas

5.) Do you have any advice for young artists?

Make art for yourself. Never make anything you wouldn’t want in your own house.
