Hollister Ranch Open April 2022

Hollister Ranch is one of the few sacred, stretches of coastline still left in California. Access is limited, mainly for Ranch Owners and some lucky surfers, but, as of yesterday evening, Governor Gavin Newsom, has officially signed a Bill declaring, “the public must be allowed to enter the ranch by land and access some of its 8.5 miles of shoreline by April 2022.” The legislation also specifies that the ranch has to grant access to state officials as they work on the public access plan. “As Californians, respect and reverence for our beaches is in our DNA, so much so that we enshrined public beach access into our state constitution…” “…I’ve long fought to protect these public treasures for future generations and to ensure any person can experience their beauty. That won’t change now that I’m governor.”

This is upsetting to the Ranch Owners, who have submitted a letter requesting veto as they think it is unconstitutional, and also upsetting to the community of surfers that have been surfing at the Ranch for decades. ‘Officials’ have stated that they have been working with the Ranch for years but since March of this year there has finally been action to expand the park to the public. The California Coastal Commission, the State Lands Commission and California State Parks all pledged to a: “meaningful, safe, environmentally sustainable and operationally feasible public access to and along the coast at the ranch.” It’s still considered private property until April 2022.

Time will tell whether or not this is a good thing. Respect for the places we enjoy and people who steward it is always paramount. Let us know know your  thoughts in the comments below.
